I prefer flavors and tastes that are simple, refined and light. My culinary approach is based on the principles of Eastern Medicine, rich in anti-oxidants and healthy herbs, made from the finest ingredients, used only when they are in season and at their freshest. I am uncompromising when it comes to taste and health and I insist that my cuisine not only taste good, but also be good for you. I refer to this balance and the “Yin and Yang of Cooking.” With this philosophy in mind, combined with my simple and elegant approach, I create a signature blend that has remained consistent for over 30 years.
Catherine An is the Founder and Managing Partner of AN Catering, a division of House of AN, which houses the famed Crustacean Restaurants. In 2006, Catherine infused her love of art and fashion into the launch of AN Catering, utilizing her experiences gained while working for top fashion house, Richard Tyler, the ad agency of Olgivy and Mather and her family's restaurant business. Her vibrant catering division features the deliciously healthy cuisine of her mother, Helene An, as well as an in-house stylist and mixologist, to ensure a flawless execution and a memorable experience. She provides her own personalized expertise while incorporating the client's personal palate and wishes into each customized menu. Through her global travels, Catherine keeps AN Catering innovative and fresh, influencing the menu's diverse flavors. Additionally, Catherine insists on only using the freshest, seasonally appropriate ingredients, while striving to use the greenest alternatives possible.
With a reputation as being the "go-to" caterer for the Hollywood crowd, AN Catering was named as "the caterer to the stars" in 2008 by the Los Angeles Times. AN Catering also has received one of catering's highest honors, BizBash Magazine's "Best Overall Catering at an Event". This was for for the Sea Shepherd's Charity Benefit co-chaired by Mick Jagger and Pierce Brosnan, featuring an all-vegan sit down menu. Aggressively directing her catering division, Catherine caters to a "who's who" of notable retail houses, socialites and entertainment and business moguls. AN Catering's visually stunning presentation and celebrated cuisine has made quite the impression on the catering world. In addition to leading her catering service, Catherine is currently spearheading the development of a new "fresh bites on-the-go" concept, Tiato. Tiato is located inside the MTV Network/ Lionsgate building in Santa Monica, which will be doubling as an event space.
Additionally, she enjoys staying active in charities and philanthropic groups such as, Rally for Kids with Cancer, LA Live, UNICEF, CASA, and the Batonga Foundation.
The An Family story reads like a modern day fairytale. It is a story about three generations of strong-willed women from Vietnam who rose from the devastating loss of home and country with the fall of Saigon to their relocation to America and building a multi-million dollar food and hospitality empire. Helene An, matriarch of the An Family and Executive Chef of all An Family restaurants, spent much of her free time as a child in the kitchen with her family's three chefs of Chinese, French, and Vietnamese descent, absorbing their cultural differences and culinary techniques, thus enabling her to develop her personal "Ying and Yang" culinary philosophy of healthy and balanced eating.
Credited as introducing Americans to Vietnamese cuisine, the An Family's restaurants have proven to be a force in the culinary world. In 2007, An Family was inducted into the Smithsonian Institute for introducing Vietnamese cuisine to mainstream America, and the museum shared the family's inspiring story in a new Vietnamese-American wing. In 1997, House of An continued their expansion with fine dining establishment Crustacean Restaurant in Beverly Hills, CA to much critical acclaim, where Executive Chef Helene An creates her famous, award winning Euro-Vietnamese fusion cuisine. In 2007, An Catering was launched, allowing fans of the restaurant to bring the secrets of the family's kitchen with them to events large and small. In winter 2009, House of An is expanding yet again, with new concepts including AnQi, a bistro experience located inside Bloomingdale's at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, CA, and Tiato, a quick service restaurant concept located in Santa Monica, CA, set to open.
